Orphan care in Kenya often starts with a hard truth: a child has lost the people who were supposed to protect them. Illness, accidents, and abandonment leave thousands of Kenyan children without parents every year. Some move in with relatives who are already struggling to get by. Others end up in institutions. Stewards of Grace Ambassadors (SGA) believes every child deserves something better than survival, they deserve a family.

A Child Needs More Than a Roof

Orphaned children need someone to guide them, comfort them, and help them heal from loss. Without that, many struggle silently , falling behind in school, withdrawing from others, or losing hope for their own future.

SGA takes a different approach. Instead of placing children in large institutions, we work to keep them within family structures wherever possible. A grandmother, an aunt, or a vetted foster family can offer something an institution cannot: a real sense of belonging.

How SGA Supports Orphaned Children

Our Orphan Care & Guardianship Programme covers the full picture of a child’s needs, not just one piece of it. Through this programme, SGA provides:

  • Identification and registration of orphaned children within our community networks
  • Family tracing, so a child can reconnect with relatives when it is safe to do so
  • Guardianship and foster placement with trained, vetted caregiving families
  • Food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare support for children and their guardians
  • Trauma counselling to help children process grief
  • Legal documentation support, so every child has a recognized identity
  • Life-skills training for older youth preparing to live independently

Each part supports the others. A child with a stable home, proper documents, and someone to talk to about their pain stands a far better chance of growing into a confident, capable adult.

What This Looks Like Day to Day

Picture a ten-year-old boy who just lost both parents within the same year. SGA’s team first works to find out whether safe relatives exist nearby. If a grandmother steps forward but cannot afford school fees or food, our programme steps in to cover those basic needs so the child can stay with family instead of moving into an institution.

If no safe family member exists, we carefully match the child with a trained foster family. A counsellor checks in regularly to help him process the loss. As they grows older, mentors guide him toward independence, so he leaves guardianship prepared for adult life rather than starting from zero.

This is what orphan care in Kenya should look like, not a shortcut, but a steady, patient investment in a child’s whole future.

Why Family-Based Care Matters

Children thrive best inside families. Research and decades of child welfare experience both point to the same conclusion: institutions can meet basic needs, but they rarely replace the emotional security of a real caregiver who knows a child by name. SGA’s guardian and foster families often come from communities we already serve, including widows and elderly relatives supported through our other programmes. This overlap strengthens both the child’s support system and the wider community around them.

Get Involved in Orphan Care

You do not need to adopt a child to make a real difference. There are several ways to support this work:

  • Sponsor an orphaned child’s basic needs
  • Apply to become a vetted guardian or foster parent through our screening process
  • Volunteer as a counsellor, legal documentation helper, or youth mentor
  • Partner with SGA to help us reach more orphaned children in your region

Every child deserves a family. Reach out to Stewards of Grace Ambassadors today and help us give Kenya’s orphaned children the belonging they deserve.
